Welcome to Skyline Sailing School
Welcome to Skyline Sailing School, located at Monroe Harbor, where quality sailing instruction becomes affordable and is not just for a select few. With no club memberships or seasonal commitments, your instruction is just what you really need: excellent instruction and the ability to use your skills independently.
Skyline Sailing School’s Instructors are certified by the ASA and/or are USCG licensed captains with years of sailing experience, providing instruction based on the standards of the American Sailing Association, the first unified standards program in the U.S. The Skyline Sailing School Instruction Program is geared toward giving each student the opportunity to gain skills, knowledge, and confidence on the waters of Lake Michigan, through step by step instruction.
It is Skyline Sailing School’s goal to have every student find success through instruction! Whether it is in boat handling or gaining personal confidence, each student will have the opportunity to state their goals, allowing him/her to measure their success upon completion. Each student is treated as an individual, and different teaching methods are explored in areas of student weakness. Additional practice sailing time is available throughout the week, if needed, for a nominal fee.
Courses are set to standards based on ASA standards, and every student will be measured against them. At successful completion of these standards, both written and practical, the student will qualify to handle a vessel on their own.
Skyline Sailing School offers unique classes in the Chicago sailing community. Check out our Family Instruction Program and Women’s Programs on our class offerings page.
The 2014 season is a time for growth! As Skyline Sailing merges with Seabreeze Charter, we will be adding more classroom instruction, more boats, and more certifications! Coastal Navigation, Decorative Knots, and Splicing classes will be added to the classroom courses, and offered throughout the year. Our Skipper and new Coastal Cruising courses will be taught on our 26' keelboat Lelu, and our new Bareboat Chartering course will be taught on a 36' Beneteau Bliss. Qualified students will now have the option of independent sailing on both vessels, offering flexibility in your chartering needs. We are adding an on water Nautical Night class, as well, that covers navigation after sunset and the challenges it brings.
New this year is our Coastal Navigation Course. Based on the standards of the American Sailing Association, it covers reading nautical charts, dead reckoning, taking bearings and fixes, making course corrections, and rules of the road. This is a thorough navigation course! Students who complete the Coastal Navigation and Skipper Courses will qualify for a two day sail to a neighboring port, using your newfound sailing and navigation skills.
Join Skyline Sailing this summer as we set a course for adventure!
